Bastion to utrzymana w konwencji action-RPG opowieść o chłopcu, który próbuje zbudować bezpieczne schronienie dla siebie i bliskich w świecie zniszczonym przez katastrofę.

Po zamknięciu należącego do koncernu Electronic Arts wewnętrznego studia deweloperskiego w Los Angeles część jego pracowników na czele z Amirem Rao i Gavinem Simonem utworzyła nową firmę. W Supergiant Games branżowi weterani zajęli się realizacją autorskich pomysłów. Bastion jest ich pierwszym niezależnym projektem. Inspiracją do powstania gry, której wydawcą został koncern Warner Bros. stały się klasyki gatunku action-RPG z Diablo i Torchlight na czele.

Osią fabuły Bastionu jest katastrofa, określana jako The Calamity (nieszczęście). Pewnego dnia główny bohater – chłopiec o imieniu Kidd - budzi się i ku swojemu przerażeniu odkrywa, że jego łóżko wraz z częścią pokoju dryfuje wśród szczątków świata, w jakim do tej pory żył. Młodzieniec postanawia odnaleźć innych rozbitków i zbudować bezpieczne schronie
